Globalstar: A Reliable Satellite Network for Remote Communication, IoT, and Emergency Connectivity

Globalstar is a fully operational low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation providing mobile and data communications services around the world. Operating at approximately 1,400 kilometers in altitude, Globalstar's satellites form a near-global coverage network, particularly effective in remote regions underserved by terrestrial infrastructure. Originally launched to support mobile satellite voice and data services, the system has evolved into a multi-service platform delivering mobile communications, IoT tracking, private wireless networks, and even direct-to-device emergency features.

One of Globalstar’s most well-known consumer offerings is its SPOT device series, including the SPOT Gen4 and SPOT X. These portable devices allow for one-way or two-way messaging, SOS alerts, and GPS location tracking. The SPOT Gen4, for example, starts around $149.99 USD, with monthly service plans beginning at $11.95/month. The SPOT X, which includes a built-in keyboard and phone number for standalone two-way messaging, retails around $249.99 USD, with monthly plans starting at $14.95/month. These devices are commonly used by hikers, adventurers, sailors, and remote workers for peace of mind and connectivity in remote areas.

In addition to handheld devices, Globalstar provides Simplex and Duplex modems for machine-to-machine (M2M) and Internet of Things (IoT) applications. These small, rugged data modules are integrated into fleet vehicles, cargo containers, and industrial assets for real-time tracking, monitoring, and telemetry. The data-only plans for these modules can cost as little as $10 to $20/month, depending on the volume of messages and frequency of updates.

Globalstar’s Band 53/n53 mid-band spectrum allows it to deliver private LTE and 5G services, a fast-growing area of focus. Companies in logistics, mining, and manufacturing are now leveraging this spectrum to deploy private wireless networks inside their facilities for faster automation, better connectivity, and secure operations. The XCOM Radio Access Network (RAN) technology used by Globalstar boosts capacity by 3x to 4x compared to traditional small-cell solutions, making it especially attractive for large-scale industrial use.

Perhaps most visible to the general public is Globalstar’s role in powering Apple’s Emergency SOS satellite feature, available on iPhone 14 and later. This service allows users in distress to send SOS messages via satellite when out of cellular range. Apple has invested significantly in Globalstar’s infrastructure, including funding satellite upgrades and global ground stations. The service is currently offered free for two years with qualifying iPhones, after which Apple may offer a paid subscription.

As of 2025, Globalstar has over 260,000 voice and data subscribers and more than 480,000 active IoT devices in the field. With new replacement satellites set to launch aboard SpaceX Falcon 9 rockets, the constellation is being upgraded for even greater capacity and longevity, aiming for at least 15 more years of operation.
